Oppose Large eCommerce Center Near Eugene Airport: Amazon not welcome here
The Issue
We oppose the proposed 320,000-square-foot parcel-distribution center near the Eugene Airport. This project, likely an Amazon facility, threatens our community's well-being and environment in several critical ways.
First, the environmental impact is severe. With an estimated 2,592 vehicle trips per day, the facility would significantly increase air pollution. The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) is already grappling with how to regulate emissions from this massive influx of traffic.
Second, the project exploits zoning loopholes to circumvent proper oversight. While the land is zoned for industrial use, a distribution center of this scale was never the intended purpose. This undermines our community's ability to guide responsible development.
Third, contrary to promises of economic benefits, this facility is unlikely to create high-quality jobs. Instead, it may simply displace existing delivery jobs while failing to provide the type of employment our industrial zones were designed to attract. Amazon’s massive development of a robotic workforce threatens the longevity of promised jobs in our area. And what is to stop it from becoming another Hynix, a flaunted corporate enterprise that shut down and laid off 1400 after a mere decade’s operation?
Furthermore, the company behind this project has a troubling record of labor violations and tax avoidance strategies. Welcoming such a corporation into our community could lead to worker exploitation and deprive our local government of much-needed tax revenue for public services.
The proposed facility would bring unprecedented traffic congestion to our area, with parking planned for up to 1,400 vehicles. This would not only increase emissions but also drastically alter the character of our community and reduce quality of life for residents, with infrastructure damage, light and noise pollution, and likely increased air traffic.
We urge you to take immediate action to halt this project. We need to close the zoning loopholes that allow such inappropriate development, and strengthen environmental and labor protections. Please prioritize sustainable economic growth that aligns with our community's values and long-term well-being. Our air quality, agriculture, and local economy depend on your leadership in opposing this harmful development.
