The Issue

For the commuters of Sutton Coldfield, the recent decision to increase parking charges at our railway station has hit hard. Right now, the daily parking fee is £1.30, but from the 17th of August 2026 it will be jumping to an eye-watering £3.00. For regular commuters like myself, this translates to an extra cost of approximately £60 per month or £720 annually. These changes were made without any public consultation and I know I'm not alone in feeling blindsided and frustrated.

The increase in parking charges and the removal of free parking for season ticket holders risks discouraging the use of rail travel altogether. For many, driving is becoming a more financially viable option, leading to increased road congestion and pollution in our community. This not only contradicts environmental goals but also places a heavier burden on our already busy roads.

Moreover, the ripple effects are likely to extend beyond just the station's car park. With commuters potentially opting out of using the car park due to its prohibitive cost, our residential streets may see a surge in parked cars. Nearby free station car parks such as Chester Road or Wylde Green might face similar overflow challenges, leading to further inconvenience.

Local businesses situated near the station that thrive on commuter footfall are also at risk. If rail users start avoiding the station due to these exorbitant costs, our local economy could suffer significantly. These businesses are a vital part of the community, providing jobs and services that we rely on.

The lack of community consultation before these changes were implemented is a stark reminder of the disconnect between decision-makers and those who are affected by these decisions. We demand a reassessment of the parking charges with proper involvement from the community. Affordable parking options must be reinstated to encourage rail travel, relieve pressure on local roads and support our local businesses.

Join me in urging the relevant authorities to reconsider and reverse these parking charges. Let’s preserve our community’s integrity and ensure sustainable travel options remain accessible to all.
