Oppose HASD's discriminatory policy 321.1 against LGBTQIA+
The Issue
As a student and member of the LGBTQIA+ community at the Hollidaysburg Area School District (HASD), I am deeply offended by the recently enacted Policy 321.1, which unjustly targets and restricts expressions of support for LGBTQIA+ individuals. This policy, which bans decorations such as rainbows and other symbols of our community, not only stifles freedom of expression but also fosters an environment of exclusion and discrimination. Moreover, it targets supportive staff members by threatening their job security if they do not comply, further marginalizing and scapegoating those who advocate for diversity and inclusivity.
Policy 321.1 represents a troubling step backward in the fight for equality and acceptance, opening the door to a culture of intolerance within our schools. This goes against the universal values of respect, acceptance, and celebration of differences that our educational institutions should uphold. A school environment should be a safe and nurturing space for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, where they can learn and grow without fear of judgment or alienation.
Data from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) consistently underscores that inclusive school policies significantly reduce incidents of bullying and harassment and contribute to a more positive overall school climate for all students—not just those who identify as LGBTQIA+. Schools that embrace inclusivity have been shown to experience higher student performance and wellbeing metrics. Thus, HASD's policy not only harms students but also undermines the district's educational goals.
We propose the immediate repeal of Policy 321.1. In its place, we ask for a new, inclusive policy that allows educators to create classrooms that reflect diversity, support all students, and actively work towards a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination of any kind.
We urgently call upon the Hollidaysburg Area School District Board to listen to its students, staff, and community members. Let's work together for a policy that affirms the rights and identities of all individuals who walk the halls of our schools. Please sign this petition to help stop the marginalization of LGBTQIA+ community members in our schools and to foster an environment where love, acceptance, and learning can thrive.
