The Issue

This last week, Republican House members, including "Stephen Frank (Dist. 20-Greenville), Josiah Magnuson* (Dist. 38-Spartanburg), Robert Harris* (Dist. 36-Spartanburg), Jordan Pace* (Dist. 117-Berkeley), Richard Yow* (Dist. 53-Chesterfield, Darlington & Lancaster), John McCravy III* (Dist. 13-Greenwood & Laurens), Mark Willis* (Dist. 16-Greenville & Laurens), Steven Wayne Long* (Dist. 37-Spartanburg), Melissa Lackey Oremus (Dist. 84-Aiken), Phillip Bowers* (Dist. 3-Pickens), Jeff Johnson* (Dist. 58-Horry), and Wallace "Jay" Jordan* (Dist. 63-Florence, Chairman of House Ethics Committee)," all voted on a resolution to ask the US Supreme Court to overturn its ruling in Obergefell v Hodges (2015), which recognized the right of same-sex couples to be married, based on the 14th-Amendment to the US Constitution.

South Carolinians did not ask for this. Read the room. Look at the comments on the news-stories on WIS TV or the Post and Courier. People are angry that their hard-earned tax money is being wasted on this SETTLED issue.

We, the undersigned, are South Carolinians (and Americans more broadly) who oppose this measure, whether it is symbolic or not. We, the undersigned, represent a diverse group of people, conservative, liberal, independent, libertarian, left-leaning, right-leaning, or apolitical.  We, the undersigned, oppose all attempts by our state legislature to waste our tax money during a time of record inflation, hyper-partisan strife, and international conflict to attact our friends, family, and partners who are members of the LGBT community (whether through attacks on their civil rights, obsession over bathrooms, etc.). We call on our legislators to remember they work for us, the people of South Carolina, and not the culture warriors of fringe minorities within the GOP. Work on our roads. Fix our school system. Pay our teachers. Fight crime. Help the homeless. Remember that there are more than six million people in this state, all of whom are (for those of us who are religious), children of God. Regardless of personal beliefs, we all agree that every resident of this state, and this country, is worthy of dignity and respect.

Furthermore, those of us in SC agree in signing this to support only those candidates for our state government that refuse to take part in divisive and fringe culture issues like this.
