Oppose Edgewood Becoming a Municipality
The Issue
For residents of Edgewood, Maryland, the essence of our community is threatened by the possibility of transforming into Harford County's next municipality. Our identity as an unincorporated section of the county ensures we retain the unique characteristics that have always defined us. We have a deep-seated connection to our community, and it's crucial our voices are heard loud and clear.
Right here in Edgewood, we are already well-served by the Harford County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) Southern precinct, ensuring our safety and security needs are met without requiring our own police department. This arrangement not only works effectively but also keeps our community closely integrated with the broader county services. Additionally, our fire needs are adequately covered by existing firehouses, maintaining a vital service that's part of our safety net.
Moreover, we have representation on the county council, affording us a voice in county-wide decisions without the need for an additional governmental layer. What’s more, instituting a municipality inevitably translates to an increase in property taxes. Transitioning to a municipal structure means higher taxes and more bureaucracy, burdens that we simply do not need! Edgewood is fully enforced by state and county regulations, we do not need a city council to create further restrictions.
Edgewood is more likely to thrive without these additional overheads. With increased taxes, residents would face financial constraints and challenges to sustain our lifestyles. Being part of Harford County as an unincorporated area has served us perfectly well and continues to do so. The services provided are tailored and consistently maintain our community's welfare without the increased financial strain of a municipality.
Financial strain on homeowners property taxes would most likely be in the area of .50 to .75%.
The state run website https://dat.maryland.gov/Pages/Tax-Rates.aspx
Shows what current municipality tax rates are. Let's face it, it's mainly the people who rent or receive assistance thar want this because they don't incur the financial burden. Why should property owners pay yet another tax for items that don't serve us ?
We, the residents, prefer the status quo over uncertain changes that could complicate our lives and inflate our expenses. Join me in preserving the integrity and functionality of Edgewood by signing this petition. Let us send a strong message: keep Edgewood as it is- unincorporated!
