Imagine living in a community where the air is pure, the water is clean, and the quality of life is something to be cherished. Now, imagine that tranquility being threatened by the establishment of a 9,000 head swine Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) in Grant County, Indiana. For me and my neighbors, this is not just a hypothetical situation but an impending reality that places our environment and community lifestyle at significant risk.

One of the most pressing concerns is the enormous quantity of water these operations will demand (10 million gallons of water a year), putting our water availability and quality at risk.  The introduction of such a vast number of animals brings about a proportional increase in manure output, which poses a high risk of contaminating local waterways.  (1 million gallons or more on just under 600 acres of farmland that drain to Cart Creek, Pipe Creek, Metocinah Creek and the Mississinewa Reservoir) . Studies from the Environmental Protection Agency have shown that runoff from CAFOs often leads to nutrient pollution, which can cause harmful algae blooms in rivers and lakes, endangering aquatic life and rendering water unsafe for human consumption or recreation.

Moreover, the quality of life for families living near such operations is drastically diminished. The air surrounding CAFOs often carries pollutive compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, which contribute to foul odors and respiratory issues among nearby residents. According to research from Johns Hopkins University, prolonged exposure can lead to more severe health problems, compounding the negatives faced by our community.

The introduction of this CAFO could also impact property values, deter families from settling in our community, and ultimately does not align with community goals. This operation represents a short-term profit for few over the long-term health and prosperity of the many.

We urge our local government and environmental regulatory agencies to consider the long-term implications of permitting such a facility in our area. There are sustainable farming practices that should be encouraged which can balance both agricultural needs and community welfare. We need thoughtful legislation that supports environmentally conscious and community-centric agricultural operations. Said operations may need to exist, but there need to be better, safer standards for how close to residential areas and areas of natural resources.
