More and more terrible practices at the OC Shelter are coming to light. Please read below what happened.
Meet Pepper and Azul, a bonded pair of young, healthy dogs who had a family who loved them.
One day Pepper and Azul got out of their yard and in running around, they allegedly killed a community cat. Of course, this is very sad, but it does not mean that these dogs are vicious or dangerous, or that there was not a REMEDY to keep them in their loving family, who desperately wanted them back.
However, the current team that works in Animal Control does not give dogs back. They threaten and bully families to surrender their pets. Many times. We have families who will tell their stories. They do not tell owners they can request a hearing. They do not tell owners there are resources for help. (us) They are careful to not communicate in writing so owners have NO recourse. They take the dogs, and lock them up for weeks or months NEVER getting out of their kennels at all.
****THIS IS WHAT THEY DID WITH PEPPER AND AZUL*******
So the owners tearfully surrendered their beloved dogs believing they had no choice. They filled out the paperwork making sure to tell OCAC that Pepper was on medication for seizures and that she had been diagnosed with seizures by a veterinarian.
The shelter then made them available to rescues to come and save them and adopt them out to a different family. Makes sense, eh?
Some of us emailed the shelter and implored them to communicate to their family that there was help and support if they wanted to redeem their pets. They declined to let the family know that there was help and resources several times. (emails below)
The veterinarian at the shelter, who had never treated these dogs before, decided to take Pepper off of her seizure meds. Azul and Pepper were kenneled for 3 weeks, and Pepper never got her seizure meds. Was she having seizures in the shelter? Who knows? Did a vet see Pepper to see how she was doing? NOPE.
Finally, a rescue came and saved Pepper and Azul. While shelter staff was bringing them out, Pepper had a seizure. Shelter staff assured the rescue that this was the first time and the she was good to go. While this very bonded pair was being transported away from their jail, Pepper suffered a fatal seizure and died while Azul watched on, crying for his sister.
PEPPER DIED OF A MASSIVE SEIZURE BECAUSE THE OCAC VETERINARIAN TOOK HER OFF OF HER SEIZURE MEDICATION FOR THREE WEEKS. Offers to help reunite the family began 15 days before Pepper died. She could have been home and back on her medications. And alive.
This is sinister. This is criminal. How can they be allowed to continue to operate like this? Animals are suffering and dying. They are not being given appropriate care.
