Open Letter to General Synod Representatives

The Issue

We the undersigned, request you, as our Diocesan General Synod Representatives, to lobby and vote at the forthcoming General Synod for a change to the present House of Bishops’ Code of Conduct and subsequent guidance and, if required, changes to Canon Law, which will allow those who are ordained and in same sex civil marriages to be issued with a licence or Permission to Officiate.

We are particularly affected by this historic discrimination at St James’, Porto where our Locum Chaplaincy Priest, Father David Hawthorn has had to stand down as his PtO has not been renewed.  In many countries such as Portugal, civil partnerships are not legally recognised, requiring couples, whether same sex or not, to celebrate their commitment to each other through civil marriage.

Since ordained over 30 years ago,  Father David has faithfully served God and the Church of England. His energetic and inspiring ministry at St James over the last two years has resulted in a growing congregation, enriched spiritual and pastoral life, and brought renewed hope that the Church  has a strong future.

The New Testament teaches us of God’s love and Jesus’ constant rejection of discrimination and prejudice. This should apply equally to all, both within and outside the Church of England.

Within the last few days we have heard that the Church of England is backtracking on the agreement made at Synod in February this year and are now indicating the issue of same sex civil marriages for Priests will not be addressed until 2025.  This will mean there has been no movement on these issues since the Living in Love and Faith process started 7 years ago.

This causes us grave concern. The impact for us is serious - not only for our beloved Priest, but the future of St James Anglican Community here in Porto.
