The Issue

For the past three winters, I have volunteered at the emergency warming shelter in Clarksville, TN. During this time, I have seen firsthand the struggles and challenges faced by the unhoused individuals who seek refuge there. Many are not much different from any of us – they are regular people who have fallen on hard times. What they need most is stability and access to resources that can help them transform their lives. Some also suffer from mental health issues and lack the support necessary to manage their conditions effectively.

Despite the efforts of local organizations and volunteers, Clarksville still lacks a permanent shelter equipped to provide comprehensive services to address these critical needs. A facility where people not only find temporary shelter, but also gain access to social services, mental health care, and job training could be transformative for many of our community members currently without a stable home.

Statistics from the National Alliance to End Homelessness reveal that access to stable housing and supportive services significantly reduces long-term homelessness. They show that with the proper infrastructure and support, individuals are more likely to reintegrate into society and achieve independence.

I fully support the proposed plan that the city of Clarksville invests in the establishment of a comprehensive homeless shelter. This shelter should include facilities for mental health services, job placement and training programs, addiction counseling, and more, to serve as a stepping stone towards a brighter future.

I firmly believe that with the support of the city government and our community, we can build a place that offers not only a temporary roof over people's heads but also a pathway to stability and self-sufficiency.

Join me in supporting this crucial initiative. Let's ensure every individual in Clarksville has the opportunity for a stable, hopeful future. Please sign this petition to urge the city council to take action on building a comprehensive homeless shelter in Clarksville.

Thank you for reaching out. For my response, there is nothing to respond to. I am against adding the shelter. My reasons for this conclusion will be discussed at the March meeting. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Travis Holleman Clarksville City Council Ward 7 Cell: 931-561-6314
