ONE Tree Away - Defend The Philippine's Typhoon Protector Against The Verge of Destruction
The Issue
The Sierra Madre Mountain Range is the country's longest mountain range, extending from Cagayan to Quezon. It is proudly 6,069 feet tall and covers 10 provinces. It has roughly 1.4 million hectares of forest, or 40% of the Philippines' total forest cover, and is home to the largest remaining section of old-growth tropical rainforest. It is not only abundant in biological diversity and endemism, but it is also home to many indigenous people.
Sierra Madre also acts as a typhoon barrier, weakening approaching storms from the Pacific before they hit the central mainland. It is the largest and most unique wilderness in the Philippines, spanning from the mountains to the sea. However, the interconnectedness of its terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems is in a precarious equilibrium and is in danger of being extinct.
Human activities such as illicit logging, mining, the conversion of forest for agriculture, and migration continues to threaten Sierra Madre. Despite a national and international push to protect the ecosystem, the forest there is still degrading. The main cause of Sierra Madre's terrible situation is still logging. Further threats to the area's ecosystem and the lives of its stakeholders include human encroachment and the associated timber poaching, mining, the conversion of forests for agriculture, migration, and development, particularly the building of roads that will improve access and the potential for exploitation of the area. Additional mega-dams are also being considered for construction. Generally speaking, the continuous destruction of the environment is a result of corruption, ineffective enforcement of laws protecting the environment and the forests, and a lack of alternative sources of income for many poor people.
On that note, this petition encourages you to vote against these illegal human activities that severely affects the safety and beauty of Sierra Madre. Your vote will help not only us but also to the animals and people living within the confines of Sierra Madre who are not given a chance to voice out their concerns and problems.
