Thank you to everyone who has supported the One Site, One Plan campaign.
Brighton & Hove City Council has now confirmed that the King Alfred Leisure Centre planning application is due to be determined by the Planning Committee on 29 July 2026.
This means we are entering the most important stage of the planning process.
Before the committee meets, we are expecting the publication of the Planning Officer's report and recommendation, prepared by Case Officer Maria Seale. This document is likely to be published around a week before the committee meeting and will be one of the most significant documents produced during the entire process.
The report will need to analyse and assess:
• Heritage objections from local and national heritage organisations.
• Urban design criticisms, including comments from the Council's own Urban Design Team.
• The structural survey issue and the evidence used to justify demolition.
• Accessibility concerns raised by users and clubs.
• Leisure provision arguments and the loss of facilities compared with the existing centre.
• The relationship between the leisure centre and wider site development.
• The unprecedented volume of objections submitted to the application.
Most importantly, the report will need to explain how the King Alfred Redevelopment Team believes these concerns can be overcome and why the application should, or should not, be approved.
At the time of writing, the planning application has attracted 524 objections and 43 supporting comments, demonstrating the significant public interest in this proposal.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
When the officer's report is published, we will analyse it in detail and share our findings.
We encourage everyone who cares about the future of the King Alfred site to become active over the coming weeks.
Please consider:
• Contacting your local ward councillors.
• Contacting members of the Planning Committee and asking them to carefully review the application and all relevant evidence.
• Sharing information with friends, family and community groups.
• Joining our mailing list for updates.

One Site, One Plan.
Residents should be able to see the full picture before decisions are made that will affect the future of this important seafront site for generations to come.
