Demand Support for Ohio University's CLJC and Pre-Law Advisor

Demand Support for Ohio University's CLJC and Pre-Law Advisor
The Issue
The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences recently informed the CLJC community of plans to severely cut the CLJC academic and pre-law programming budget; withdraw critical support for the CLJC MA program; and relocate CLJC Pre-Law Specialist Larry Hayman, in whole or in part, to a broadly-focused CAS undergraduate advising center.
If implemented, the administration’s proposal would have drastic implications for CLJC and Ohio University. Founded a decade ago with support and encouragement of the Dean, the Provost, the President, and the Board of Trustees, CLJC is the central university unit coordinating curricular and co-curricular programs on the critical law and justice challenges of our times. CLJC starts working with students while they are still in high school, offers comprehensive programming and career advising during their time at Ohio University, and follows them beyond commencement with its graduate program and extensive array of alumni activities. CLJC trains undergraduate and graduate students to think critically about law and inequality, mass incarceration, policing and protest, surveillance and technology, and human rights and international justice. We build community and promote intellectual exchange.
Please write to Dean Florenz Plassmann (plassmann@ohio.edu) and Provost Elizabeth Sayrs (sayrs@ohio.edu) sharing how CLJC has impacted you academically and professionally and asking to:
- Keep Larry Hayman’s position fully in CLJC; and provide adequate funding to support CLJC programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
