Offleash Dog Beaches in Downtown Squamish

The Issue

Dog owners in Squamish have few places to let their pets run free, leading to crowded parks and conflicts. Families and individuals without dogs often face disruptions from uncontrolled dogs.

Without change, these issues will persist, causing safety concerns and environmental damage. By designating off-leash beach areas at Sp’akw’us Feather Park and the beach near Xwu’nekw Park, we create safe, enjoyable spaces for everyone, promoting responsible pet ownership and a better park experience.

We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and dog enthusiasts of the District of Squamish, hereby petition the District Council to create designated off-leash dog beaches within downtown Squamish. We propose that specific sections of Sp’akw’us Feather Park and the beach near Xwu’nekw Park and Canoe Shelter be allocated for off-leash dog activities.

Proposed Locations:
Sp’akw’us Feather Park: Utilize half of the public beach area which is currently too windy and rugged for family use. Specifically, we suggest designating the right-hand side of the larger beach for off-leash activities.

Beach near Xwu’nekw Park: This area is not commonly used for swimming or picnicking, making it an ideal location for an off-leash dog beach.

Rationale:
Underutilized Spaces: Both proposed areas are not heavily used by families for recreation due to their natural conditions.

Community Benefits:

Providing off-leash areas supports the needs of dog owners and promotes responsible pet ownership, enhancing the community’s quality of life.
Environmental Considerations: Properly managed off-leash areas can coexist with environmental protections, ensuring the preservation of natural habitats

Site-Specific Regulation Ideas:

  • Time Restrictions: Off-leash activity at Sp’akw’us Feather Park to be allowed only before 10 am and after 7 pm during peak season (June 10 to September 2, 2024).
  • Area Restrictions: Off-leash activity to be restricted to specific areas within the parks, such as the right-hand side of the larger beach at Sp’akw’us Feather Park.
  • Event Prioritization: Sporting and community events will have priority over off-leash activities.
  • Prohibitions: Off-leash activities to be prohibited during beach closures.

General Regulations:

  • Dogs must remain within the owner's control and vision at all times.
  • Dogs must respond within three calls, be well-mannered, and must not jump on people, interfere with other park users, damage property, or chase wildlife.
  • Dogs in heat are prohibited from off-leash areas.
  • Dangerous dogs must be leashed and muzzled.
  • Signs indicating off-leash areas should be clearly posted.
  • Respect for nearby residents is crucial, and barking dogs should be kept away from residences, especially before 8 am.

By establishing these designated off-leash dog beaches, the District of Squamish can provide safe and enjoyable spaces for dogs and their owners while ensuring the areas are well-regulated and respectful of other park users and local residents.

We kindly urge the District Council to consider our petition favorably and look forward to a positive outcome that benefits the entire Squamish community.
