Official recognition of Work Place Suicides in the UK

The Issue

The workforce is the most valuable asset to a business, and work related stressors may contribute to an individual's suicide, yet there is no official recognition of a “workplace suicide” in the UK.

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) guidance states that suicides are not reportable although the Regulations require the reporting of any death arising as a ‘result of a work-related accident’.

We feel it is the duty of the employer to assess, manage risk & prevent work related stressors and physical harm to their workforce. In our lifetime, a large portion of our days is spent at work and the workplace can have a huge impact on our quality of life.

Why is this important?
Businesses should provide more inclusive workplaces that support workers to talk about suicide, provide support mechanisms, address work related stressors and change their workplace policies and practices to foster healthy work environments and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) regulator should monitor and record work related suicides which should be included in official statistics and secondly, HSE should introduce and enforce an employer's health, safety and welfare duty for suicide prevention.

Join us in campaigning for changes in RIDDOR 2013 legislation for;

  • Formal recognition of work -place suicide in the UK;
  • To require businesses to report and investigate any attempted suicides or suicides in their workforce to the Health & Safety Executive including making changes to their workplace policies and practices;
  • For the Health & Safety Executive to investigate and report on work-place suicides and causes.

Together let's improve the mental wellbeing of our workforce. Together let's strive for mentally healthy work place cultures and environments.
