Official Recognition of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) in Europe

Official Recognition of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) in Europe
The Issue
📢 Petition: Official Recognition of Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) in Europe
To:
The European Parliament,
The European Commission,
Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE),
The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC),
The Council of the European Union.
🎯 Purpose of this petition:
We, the undersigned, call on the European institutions to officially recognize Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) as a chronic, disabling, and severely limiting condition within EU health, social rights, and inclusion policies.
MCS affects a growing number of citizens across Europe. Countries such as Germany, Austria, Sweden, and especially Japan already offer partial to substantial recognition of MCS through clinical guidelines, adapted healthcare, and administrative frameworks. However, the EU currently lacks a harmonized approach, resulting in wide disparities in recognition, care, and protection for individuals with MCS across member states.
📌 We ask for:
Official recognition of MCS as a physical and neurological condition under EU health and social policy.
Access to specialized healthcare in all member states, including the inclusion of environmental illnesses in European medical guidelines.
Social protection for individuals with MCS, including:
Eligibility for disability benefits and legal disability status.
Access to chemical-free or low-toxin housing.
Protection from discrimination in the workplace and in healthcare settings.
Training and awareness-raising among healthcare providers, policymakers, and employers to prevent misdiagnosis, stigmatization, and medical neglect.
EU-funded scientific research (e.g., through Horizon Europe) into causes, treatments, and prevention of MCS.
🧠 What is MCS?
Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a condition in which individuals experience adverse health effects after exposure to low levels of chemicals commonly found in everyday environments — such as perfumes, cleaning products, paints, exhaust fumes, pesticides, adhesives, solvents, and chemical additives in food (e.g. colorants, preservatives, flavor enhancers).
Symptoms may include:
Breathing difficulties,
Headaches and cognitive dysfunction,
Heart palpitations, nausea, dizziness,
Chronic fatigue,
Neurological and immune system reactions.
Many people with MCS live in social isolation due to a lack of access to safe, low-chemical environments or suitable healthcare.
✊ Why sign this petition?
✅ To demand recognition, rights, and protection for thousands of Europeans living with MCS.
✅ To ensure access to care, safe housing, and social inclusion.
✅ For a Europe that protects the most vulnerable among us.
✍️ Sign this petition and support the MCS community in Europe!
Every signature matters.
Together, we raise our voices for visibility, recognition, and a future without exclusion.
