Yesterday the Supreme Court allowed Mumbai’s Coastal Road work to continue. It has lifted the stay passed by the Bombay High Court in June 2019 on the grounds of “serious lacuna in the decision-making process and lack of proper scientific study”. Without hearing the arguments, the SC has allowed the government to go ahead with reclaiming the land and building the road and said that it will hear all parties in April 2020. This means that the destruction of Mumbai’s fragile coastline will continue.
Mumbai can now forget about its beaches and welcome major flooding. With the severe warnings about climate change in the news, the government should really be thinking about protecting the coastline and marine ecology of Mumbai, but instead they continue to think about “development” which will not achieve its goal of reducing congestion.
Citizens need to stand up and ask questions and make the government accountable for environmental protection, which absolutely cannot be sacrificed for irresponsible development benefitting only politicians and contractors. When the coastal road needs 20 hectares reclamation why are 90 hectares being reclaimed?
Please tweet, post and speak up and ask the government questions to protect Mumbai. If the Supreme Court hears the matter all the way in April 2020, there will be nothing left to protect.

The Mumbai #CoastalRoad project is a nightmare, not a dream. Please wake up and stop this anti-Mumbai, pro-flooding project that wastes Rs 12,800 crores. @OfficeOfUT @CMOMaharashtra AUThackeray change.org/savethecoast #saveourcoast #NoCoastalRoad #CoastalRoad
