Reevaluate the decision made to make the state cheer competition video-submission only.

Reevaluate the decision made to make the state cheer competition video-submission only.

The Issue

The OASSA has announced to make the state cheerleading competition a video-submission only event. This is not only heartbreaking to cheerleaders, but to their families, friends, and community members. With a video-submission competition the cheerleaders do not get the chance to compete with the usual "state competition" atmosphere. Having a normal competition is fairly impossible and that is not what we are asking for. However, we do believe that more can be done to give it the most "normal" feel as possible and the situation should be reevaluated. The OHSAA has followed all guidelines and regulations to make sure athletes have a season with limited spectators, even with sports such as wrestling and basketball where contact is almost constant. If these sports are allowed to have their in-person games and tournaments, cheer teams should be given the opportunity to as well. We understand that there are things that need to be done and it will be a lot of work to host an in-person competition. Even one with no spectators and a live broadcast would be better than submitting a video of our team competing in front of no one in our own high school gym. We could compete in front of other cheer teams that are in our division (spread out through the arena) and the judges while our routine is broadcasted. We could go to the state competition with only our team and parents and leave immediately after. We could compete in a smaller college or even a big enough high school to save money and compete in front of very few people. There are things that can be done to give us athletes the ability to compete at a real competition and these are only a few examples. We are asking the OASSA to take a second look at their decision and signing this petition will boost the support behind our wishes and maybe push them to give it a second thought.
