Petition updateOakland Students Cannot Wait — The Board Must Adopt a Real Fiscal Plan on December 10Petition Update — From One Parent to Another

I wanted to share another update as a parent who’s been trying to understand all of this in real time - and honestly, it keeps getting more concerning.

This week’s SF Chronicle reporting made something very clear: the chief business officer - widely viewed as the most fiscally competent and steady hand in the district — is now gone. She was the one person consistently flagging the financial risks, pushing for responsible planning, and trying to keep OUSD from sliding further toward insolvency.

Her departure is being described as a “resignation,” but from the outside, it’s hard not to wonder whether she was pushed out for doing exactly what a CBO is supposed to do: tell uncomfortable truths and say no when the math doesn’t work.

As a parent, this is alarming. When the only person focused on fiscal reality leaves — while the district is already on the brink — it signals that leadership is not willing to face the consequences of their decisions. And once again, it’s our kids who will feel the impact through instability, cuts, and chaos.

I didn’t start paying attention to this thinking about recalls. But watching competent leadership exit, one by one, while board members aligned with OEA-backed leadership continue down the same path makes it hard to see how this turns around without real accountability.

Thank you for signing and staying engaged. Please keep sharing this with other parents, asking questions, and talking within your school communities. None of us want to be here — but we all want schools that are stable, honest about finances, and truly putting students first.
