Friends of Graue Mill & Museum - we have almost 10,000 signatures to our petition, asking the DuPage County Forest Preserve District to save and protect the dam on Salt Creek next to the Mill. BUT WE NEED YOU!!
With YOUR HELP we can save the dam and preserve the area all around this historic Mill. Obviously we're closed now, like almost all interactive historic sites, but when you CAN come back to enjoy this place of history, we ALL would like it to reflect what it looked like to Frederick Graue, as best we can. We present that history in many ways - our annual "JOURNEY ON THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD" is excellent; our fresh-ground corn meal is the basic ingredient in so many treats, the beauty of the water going over the dam is the background for so many family photos (and wedding pictures, too!) and the shores and the backwaters of beautiful Salt Creek are home to countless species of wild animals and birds. One of the busiest times of the day around the Mill and along the Salt Creek walking paths? Early, early morning!!!! That's when many wildlife photographers are out there, getting SPECTACULAR shots.
Sadly, there is another group that has put together a petition, too. It looks for all the world like it is promoting the preservation of the dam and the surrounding grounds, but they are, indeed, promoting the idea that Salt Creek must be "saved" by removing the dam and channeling the flow of the river into a narrow bed, farther north (away from the Mill.)
They are entitled to their opinion...it is sad that they choose to make it look like they're supporting our effort.
PLEASE SIGN the peitition if you have not already done so - - - and if you would be so kind as to share it with your friends and neighbors, HISTORY WILL BE THE WINNER!!!!! Thank you!
