After the racist massacre of 50 Muslim New Zealanders praying at a mosque in Christchurch, it has become crystal clear that American-style white supremacy is on the rise around the world. The Christchurch shooter’s manifesto and White Power hand gestures show plainly that he was emboldened and encouraged by Trump “as a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose.” [Christchurch shooter’s manifesto, 2019]
Trump is not an ally to our ideals
Trump’s dismissive response to the issue of white supremacy shows that he is not an ally to diversity and acceptance, and is therefore not an ally to New Zealand. As the leader of the free world, he has an absolute responsibility not to be seen to permit the spread of hateful ideas and actions, and indeed, not to incite his followers to commit violent hate crimes. However, by his response to the rising white supremacist ideology, he has shown that he is willing to continue as a thought leader in hate and ignorance.
An unprecedented situation calls for unprecedented action: Cut ties to the USA
We call on Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern to cut diplomatic ties to the United States of America until the white supremacist sympathiser President Donald J Trump has been removed from or leaves office. Send any American diplomatic staff away and bring ours home, until we are sure that the US is an ally to us.
This is a seminal moment in NZ history
Last week we lost our innocence. Now is the time when we define what we do about it and who we are as a country. We can allow white supremacist leaders like Trump to continue to lead hate against Muslims and other non-white groups (raising the odds of more bloodshed), or we can refuse to accept it.
This is the line in the sand.
