No Zero Speed Tolerance

No Zero Speed Tolerance
The issue
We the people are tired of the Police wasting resources over policing speed to absurd lengths, to the detriment of regular drivers being caught out on technicalities and at the expense of other area's desperately in need of policing.
We are tired of hearing Police representatives in the media justifying these measures with statements designed to elicit emotion over logic. We are also tired of hearing statistics quoted which are clearly mathematically unsound. One weekend doesn't make a useful statistical sample, ignoring all other factors at play other than the Police's efforts is also beyond absurd, and frankly insulting to the intellect of the general public.
Our demands are simple. Let's return to SAFETY centric road Policing. Locally tailored the hazards of the day. If there is a big storm coming, let's have Police patrolling for slips and branches while watching for tailgater's and those with no lights on. Let's have a radio advertisement reminding drivers to keep their distance and put their main beam light on, not their park lights. Let's not have Police in the middle of the storm hiding at the bottom of hills, ends of passing lanes and speed change signs with their radar... as seems to be their current response to everything.
If an area has an issue with people not indicating at roundabouts, let's address that in a similar practical locally tailored manner. We would also like Police to remember that the answer to everything is not automatically to fine someone. For this reason we want all performance measurements of Police relating to infringements to be immediately scrapped. Instead lets measure them on their use of common sense, identifying local hazards, policing a full range of safety issues and assisting the Public in a professional and pleasant manner.
In light of this, we demand an immediate end to this crazy zero tolerance national speed campaign.
We want to see Police policing the intention of the law, and not exploiting the letter of the law for their own agenda.
Lastly, we would like this petition to be taken as a call to arms. Let's end the smoke and mirrors political media nonsense regarding the Police and other Government departments. Starting with the Police we are calling for transparency, we want the lid lifted on their processes, systems and statistics. We want to know why serious crimes are not being attended in a timely manner if at all. We want to know how many needless deaths are happening due to poor systems and training. We want to see the resources going to where they will save the most lives and property, not to where they will make the most political impact.
It's only once the problems are exposed that we can do something to solve them. The endless media bombardment of Police propaganda programs like Motorway Patrol are not fooling everyone. So lets roll up our sleeves and build a better Police for for New Zealand together. Police, Government and the Community, working together, for the correct common goal we can do so much better.
