NYC’s Yellow Cabs Are Welcome Everywhere—Except Their Own Driveways.

NYC’s Yellow Cabs Are Welcome Everywhere—Except Their Own Driveways.
The Issue
We, the undersigned residents of Nassau County and surrounding communities, respectfully request a fair and compassionate review of local enforcement policies concerning taxi drivers who park their vehicles in their own residential driveways.
Recently, several taxi drivers—including long-time residents and hard-working immigrant families—have received warnings from inspectors stating that commercial vehicles may not be “standing” in residential driveways. Many of these vehicles are simply parked after long shifts serving New York City, not actively operating as commercial vehicles. These warnings are tied to vague and inconsistently applied rules that have caused confusion, stress, and a feeling of unfair targeting.
We, as neighbors and fellow community members, are deeply concerned that:
• The enforcement appears inconsistent and selectively applied
• There is no clear, accessible written explanation of the rules
• The current approach unfairly impacts working-class immigrant families
• These vehicles are not a threat—they are a means of livelihood
We respectfully ask the Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County officials to:
1. Provide a clear written explanation of what constitutes a violation
2. Pause all enforcement until transparency is established
3. Host a public forum to hear from residents directly affected
4. Allow owner-drivers to park their licensed taxi or TLC vehicle in their own driveway when not in use
5. Ensure consistent and equitable enforcement across all neighborhoods
We believe in fairness, dignity, and respect for those who work hard to support their families and serve the greater NYC community. These are our neighbors. We ask for your support.
“My father has been a yellow cab driver in NYC for over 30 years. He lives in New Hyde Park and parks his vehicle in his own driveway. Recently, inspectors have shown up telling him he can’t leave his taxi there. He’s not the only one—many other drivers in the area are being told the same, even though their cars are clean, parked, and not disturbing anyone. It feels unfair. These aren’t big trucks or eyesores—they’re lifelines. This is why we’re speaking up.”
