NYC PEDESTRIANS DESERVE SAFE SIDEWALKS AND STREETS

Motorized vehicles and bicycles have gobbled up our sidewalks, paths, and walkways.  An analysis by nyc.gov of 311 complaints from pedestrians about injuries they suffered from bike, e bike, scooter, moped, in-line skate, and skateboard collisions on sidewalks increased almost 250% from 484 in 2019 to 1,082 in 2022.

Over the past 10 years, according to a report by the Office of the Mayor, bicycles and other motorized vehicles—other than cars—have injured 2,250 pedestrians including 7 deaths. We all remember the recent tragic case of Gavin Lee, 44 years old, who died of his injuries 2 days after he was struck by a hit and run cyclist.

New York City was once chosen by Walk Friendly Cities as a Platinum-level walking city. It used to be with pleasure and peace of mind that one walked through our beautiful, exciting city. Today, there is complete disregard of our right to walk and cross the street in safety without the stress of having to gauge whether a moving vehicle on the sidewalk or in the pedestrian crosswalk will strike us, leave us hurt or hospitalized, or dead.

According to the Department of Transportation, bikes, e bikes, mopeds, scooters, are all subject to the same codes as drivers of motor vehicles:

“They must obey all traffic signs and traffic lights, regulating signs, sidewalks, and street markings.”

Additionally, the New York Vehicle and Traffic Code states:

BICYCLES OPERATION ON SIDEWALKS are PROHIBITED:

“Bicycles ridden on sidewalks may be confiscated and riders may be subject to legal sanctions.”

To enforce this, we are asking for signage to be posted on every street, lamp post, and traffic light arm stating the rules and the consequences and a serious fine for those who don’t obey. And, the DOT must begin the process of licensing all motorized/electric vehicles and their drivers.

We, the undersigned appeal to you to make our sidewalks and streets safe again for pedestrians.
