PETITION: To the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories

REGARDING: Ceasefire and End Canadian Support for the Plausible Genocide in Gaza

The International Court of Justice has ruled that Israel’s actions in Gaza “could plausibly amount to genocide” and for Israel to “take all measures in its power” to prevent all acts that could be against the Genocide Convention. Since this ruling, the government of Canada has failed to effectively call for a permanent ceasefire or stop the sale of arms and military goods to Israel. Furthermore, Canada has paused funding to UNRWA which is the only organization able to provide aid to Gaza in the scale required to meet the unfolding humanitarian crisis. In both these respects, Canada is, itself, plausibly breaking its commitment to the Genocide Convention and is, in all respects, assisting in the harm that Palestinians are enduring. 

We, the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories to request the Premier of the Northwest Territories, due to the vested interest the Northwest Territories has in Universal Human Rights, International Humanitarian Law, and the Genocide Convention, to call upon the Canadian Government to (1) fully uphold its obligations to the Genocide Convention; (2) effectively call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza; (3) fully fund organizations, including UNRWA, that will assist in the necessary life saving humanitarian efforts; and, (4) end Canadian sale of arms and military goods to Israel until it fully complies with the Genocide Convention and International Humanitarian Law.
