The Issue

Nuxalk Nation Homelands ("Bella Coola, BC, Canada")

The Nuxalk Nation has lived in our homelands for thousands of years, yet the province of BC issued a trespass notice to a Nuxalk family who built a home in our ancestral village of Nusq'lst, in the middle of a housing crisis.

Nuxalk citizens are not squatters in Nuxalk homelands and have every legal right to build a home in Nuxalk villages. This is especially disgraceful considering that BC has sold off adjacent village lands with graves.

Nuxalk’s traditional homelands total 18,000 square kilometres. Nuxalk Nation has seven reserves totalling 20 square kilometres, less than 0.1% of our ancestral territory. Nuxalk villages are the most densely populated residential areas with the least amount of land per person in Bella Coola. Approximately 50% of Nuxalk people are forced to live away due to a shortage of homes. Support our work to create healthy housing solutions for ourselves.

Sign the petition to support our human rights to live in our homelands and construct the necessary homes that our community urgently needs, without the threat of persecution. Tell British Columbia that you stand with us.
