Nutrition support for people with disability saves lives: NDIS cuts must be stopped

Movement:NDIS Funding

The issue

We are on the brink of a nutrition support catastrophe for people with disability in Australia.

As a result of last week’s decision by the NDIA, people with disability are going to have even more difficulty accessing the critical dietetic and nutrition support they need to function.

More and more people with disability will be left with no other option for support other than their local hospital.

People who live in regional and remote communities will be the hardest hit – with a major cut to travel funding for participants to receive nutrition support in their home.

People with disability often have complex nutrition needs, and this requires comprehensive dietary and nutrition support.

Nearly a quarter of Australia’s dietitians working in the disability sector are in a position where they will no longer be able to support their communities.

What is at stake?

We must act quickly to ensure that dietetic services remain available for people who need it most.

Please sign the petition to support Dietitians Australia’s call on the NDIA and the Australian Government to guarantee people with disability who need nutrition and dietetic support will receive it.

Dietitians Australia is calling for:

  1. The NDIA price cut decision for dietetics to be abolished.
  2. An appropriate indexation of dietetic services taking into account operating costs, current CPI and wage price increases.
  3. Restoration of travel budgets.

 Why?

  • The NDIA has decided to reduce the price limit for supports delivered by a dietitian by $5 per hour to a new national price limit of $188.99 per hour on 1 July 2025.
  • The price limit for provider travel time has also been reduced to 50% of the regular price limit for these items.
  • This recommendation fails to recognise the real costs of delivering high-quality, essential support to people with disability and those who live in rural and remote communities.
  • Benchmarking price limits against unlike schemes, such as the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), is deeply flawed due to the differences in the complexity of services provided under those schemes.
  • Furthermore, the NDIS has had 6 years of indexation freezes and the MBS has had no indexation on 3 separate years and low indexation (average 1.1%) spanning three decades, while operating costs due to inflation have skyrocketed.

This is about safety. Lives are at risk. These price cuts cannot go ahead.
