Dear President Trump,

Thank you for fighting to protect, promote, and provide healthcare to our nation. As health care spending continues to rise, Americans are not receiving the proportionate benefit of living longer, healthier lives. Health care bills are too complex and expensive, choices are too restrained, and insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs are climbing faster than wages and tax revenue. Patients are hit with surprise bills that devastate their families. It makes sense that Americans could receive more effective, high-value care if we remove and revise certain federal and state regulations and policies that inhibit choice and competition. Your executive order is the right fix at the right time and we thank you.

Reduced competition among clinicians leads to higher prices for health care services, reduces choice, and negatively impacts overall health care quality and the efficient allocation of resources. Out-dated and old mandated Government policies of the past have suppressed competition by reducing the available supply of providers and restricting the range of services that they can offer.

On October 3, 2019 you and your administration put our country on a path to achieve these goals for the American People by issuing an executive order to protect and improve Medicare for those that currently and will in the future benefit from its services. “It would be a mistake to eliminate Americans’ healthcare choices and to force them into a new system that is effectively a Government takeover of their healthcare... The Medicare program shall adopt and implement those market-based recommendations developed pursuant to Executive Order 13813 of October 12, 2017 (Promoting Healthcare Choice and Competition Across the United States), and published in my Administration’s report on “Reforming America’s Healthcare System Through Choice and Competition.” Doing so would help empower patients to select and access the right care, at the right time, in the right place, from the right provider.”

Now, one of the most important parts of your Executive Order is under attack by those who would like to see our healthcare system stay the same and not evolve to care for the patients of today’s market. Special interest groups and powerful lobbying is trying to stop your executive order.

Section 5 is critical to improving and reforming America’s healthcare marketplace. Nurses, the most trusted profession for almost 2 decades, play a CRITICAL role in ensuring access to safe, quality, and cost effective care across our country. Nurses are the largest workforce for healthcare delivery and must be given the ability to practice to the top of their education and training. America is facing a critical shortage of all healthcare providers and as your administration focuses on workforce development and the delivery of healthcare across all aspects of care, you are naturally going to come across Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) who are a specialized group of nurses that are uniquely prepared to face and take on these challenges. APRNs include Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Nurse Midwives. APRNs have the education and training to promote, protect, and provide timely access to the spectrum of healthcare from Primary Care access by Nurse Practitioners to access to Obstetrical and Surgical Care through Anesthesia access created by Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.

We applaud your decision to remove additional federal red tape and give the power back to the American people. Nurses look forward to working with you to move our country’s healthcare system forward.
