The Issue

Two dogs, two rabbits, two mice, two rats.  Two guinea pigs, two mini-pigs.  A little Noah’s Ark is what we ask of Nucro-Technics: freedom for a pair of each kind of animal they use at their Toronto lab.

We will arrange vet care and long-term sanctuary for each of these released animals.

Ultimately we want all the animals at their lab released, at all labs released.  But let's start with this Ark, as a gesture to that greater goal.  If Nucro-Technics cares about their animals, as they claim to, they can show that by granting immediate freedom to a few of the many animals they use.

Nucro-Technics is a large commercial lab in Toronto, focused on toxicological testing of pre-market chemicals including medical and cannabis products.  They use thousands of animals annually in often painful procedures.  Animals at their Toronto facility are force-fed and injected with toxins, and have corrosives applied to their skin, eyes & genitals.  All animals, with few exceptions, are killed in the course of the procedure, or at its end.

Last Chance for Animals recently released undercover footage of Nucro-Technics, focused on beagles.

The Investigative Journalism Bureau, too, has been covering Nucro-Technics’ use of beagles.

Nucro-Technics is a member of the Canadian Council on Animal Care, and may claim that they adhere to animal welfare guidelines in all their work. But one may reasonably ask: what does “Animal Care” mean when it routinely permits caging, traumatizing, and killing?

The Future Now!

The world is moving to non-animal testing methods: Canada’s July 2025 CEPA Strategy, The EU’s 2026 Roadmap and the U.S. 2025 FDA Roadmap all point toward a science free of animal testing.

Policy is aligning with public opinion on this issue: a large 2024 survey found that 85% percent of U.S. adults agree that animal experimentation should be phased out.  This is an issue that cuts across political divisions, with people from all over the political spectrum widely agreeing.

In Ontario, Bill 75 takes effect on January 1 of 2027, banning invasive research on dogs and cats.  Nucro-Technics should thus be phasing out their dog usage now, and arranging long-term care for all dogs in their facility.

But if it’s wrong to do it to a dog, it's wrong to do it to a rabbit or a rat.  The day is perhaps not far when all animals at every lab will find safety and love beyond the needles, knives, and cage bars.  As a gesture to this better future, we respectfully ask Nucro-Technics to release these animal pairs into sanctuary care.  We understand that they have occasionally adopted out beagles still viable after experimental use; we ask them to continue that practice for the Ark, and to extend it for all the other kinds of animals they use.

The Save Response Team, sponsor of this petition, has helped negotiate this kind of animal release in the past, including the 2015 release of Mercy the lamb from the Ontario Lamb Company, a Newmarket slaughterhouse, and the 2017 release of two rabbits from a Toronto reptile shop.

Save Response Team founder Paul Bali comments: “These releases of course mean the world to the animals saved, and are a symbol of hope for all the animals humans use & abuse.”

A delegation of activists will present this petition in person to Nucro-Technics’ management, once we get a lot of signatures.  In the meantime, please sign and share!

If you’re in the Toronto area, do come out for the monthly protests outside the Nucro-Technics facility.  You can find info on the next event at the TAVA Facebook page.
