(NTU)Take action to Push back final quiz dates and submission dates for assignment
The Issue
In light of Covid-19 worsening around the globe, many countries and cities are taking precautions by having lock-downs. This extends to the work force, traveling, being outside of homes and schools.
Currently, Singapore is facing an upsurge of imported Covid-19 cases and is adopting several measures. This includes social distancing, implementation of staying at home if one has traveled, calling off large gatherings(ticketed) that numbers more than 250 and universities calling off final examinations, while replacing it with assignments and quizzes.
NTU have also came up witch such an implementation. While she does command praises for taking drastic steps to prevent social distancing, it has brought a whole new set of problems to light. Students are all of a sudden loaded with additional assignments and quizzes. To top off that, the assignments and quizzes are brought forward in place of the original dates for final examinations.
We believe that many students, be it full-time or part-time students are greatly affected by this sudden change. Quizzes are stated to be of the same standard as the final examinations with multiple deadlines for additional assignments.
While commendable for pushing final quizzes to night time, this brings about great inconvenience for part-time students, as Covid-19 has left the labour force dwindling due to more companies implementing work-from-home practices to increase social distancing. This has led to workers on the front line to take on additional work load, and those who are working from home are also to carry out their daily work as per normal. With such practices, it is not efficient for part-time students to perform such a wide array of activities as taking leaves on multiple occasions does not help part-time students who are already overwhelmed with work.
Full-time students have their worries as well. It is a well known fact that most Year 1 to Year 3 students are overloading their academic credits to graduate within the stipulated time frame. It does not help a full-time/part-time student who has 5/4 modules to have that much additional workload added. Do the math.
The solution is simple, we would like NTU to have the finals and assignments to be moved to after week 13 with reasonable gaps in between them.
Lastly, a shout-out to the author who wrote this piece on mothership; https://mothership.sg/2020/03/ntu-students-upset-over-multiple-last-minute-assessments-after-exams-cancelled-due-to-covid-19/
and to NTU Confessions facebook page(@NTUConfess) for being an avenue for students to voice out their worries.
