NSR, Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar need a Coastal Road Exit at Napean Sea Road

NSR, Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar need a Coastal Road Exit at Napean Sea Road
The Issue
I write this petition not only as a long-time resident of Napean Sea Road but also as a concerned citizen of Mumbai, who has witnessed her peaceful neighbourhood transform into a daily battleground of traffic chaos, pollution, and urban strain. Along with fellow residents of Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar, Breach Candy, and surrounding areas, we urge the authorities to urgently reconsider the construction of a dedicated exit point for the Coastal Road at Napean Sea Road.
The Problem We Face Daily
Our neighbourhood, rich and celebrated in history and the pride of the city's early settlers, is now suffering from a severe and worsening traffic crisis. The Breach Candy stretch, already narrow and congested, has become a bottleneck for thousands of vehicles daily.
This area is home to:
- Residential buildings and heritage homes
- Schools, hospitals, and places of worship
- Banks, small businesses, and roadside vendors
- Coastal Road interchange
Imagine reaching the Breach Candy interchange from Bandra in 10 minutes, yet two-kilometre journeys ahead to our homes often take 30 to 45 minutes, sometimes longer. Noise pollution has increased. Fuel is wasted as cars sit idle, bumper to bumper. Air quality has deteriorated. Residents, schoolchildren, and the elderly are all affected.
This is not just a matter of inconvenience; it is a matter of urban wellbeing, safety, and sustainability.
1) Why Napean Sea Road Must Have Its Own Exit
Napean Sea Road offers a logical, viable, and minimally invasive location for an additional exit ramp:
- There is sufficient open space to accommodate the ramp without disturbing the garden or surrounding structures
- Such an access point was part of the original planning in 2017
- It would directly ease the load on the Breach Candy interchange till Stephan Church, which is now overwhelmed
This is not about rerouting traffic—it’s about restoring liveability.
2) Promenade Access for NSR Residents
The newly built Coastal Road promenade, soon to be a jewel in Mumbai’s crown, should not remain inaccessible to us. Residents of Napean Sea Road currently have no direct access point to the promenade, which runs alongside our very homes.
We request the inclusion of a dedicated pedestrian access to the promenade for Napean Sea Road residents as a parallel walkway. This will allow the public to enjoy the coastal asset fairly and inclusively.
The Larger Benefits Go Beyond Local Residents
This proposal benefits not only a few residents. Here’s what it will offer Mumbai at large:
- Traffic decongestion for the entire South Mumbai region, including Malabar Hill, Walkeshwar, Napean Sea Road, and Peddar Road
- Reduction in fuel consumption and vehicle idling time, helping both the environment and drivers’ wallets
- Lower air and noise pollution, improving health outcomes for thousands
- Better emergency vehicle access to hospitals in the area
- Faster connectivity between South Mumbai and the Western suburbs for all citizens
- Support for urban sustainability goals by streamlining commute patterns
Our Appeal to the BMC and State Authorities
We respectfully request the following:
- Immediate re-evaluation and revival of the earlier planned Coastal Road exit at Napean Sea Road
- Inclusion of pedestrian access from Napean Sea Road to the new promenade
- MSRDC owns the piece of land required,
- originally assigned for the exit and its between the government departments to make this happen for the larger benefit of community and citizens
This is a plea to the Chief Minsiter of Maharashtra Shri Devendra Fadanvisji and Maharashtra Govt. Authourities for functionality, fairness, and future-readiness.
Let Us Reclaim Our Right to Live Peacefully
