Novas Law: to hold police to the same animal cruelty law as us in Utah
The Issue
"The Problem:"
n 2019, Utah made killing an animal a third-degree felony under Utah Code § 76-6-301. But subsection 5 exempts police officers. This means if you or I recklessly kill a dog, we go to prison. If an officer does it, they get retraining.
My dog Nova was killed by Salt Lake City Police *on a public sidewalk because she was spooked by an officer that was acting aggressive and reckless. View the video at https://youtu.be/A_gErsvviNA?si=qyQDB6p4TtjkUk3B she never had a chance.* She was not a threat. She was my emotional support animal. Both my husband Jesse and I live with PTSD. Nova was family, not property.
"The Solution:" NOVAS LAWHold Police to the same animal cruelty law as everyone else.
Remove the police exemption in Utah Code § 76-6-301(5). Hold officers to the same felony animal cruelty law as every Utah citizen. Require non-lethal alternatives and de-escalation training before shooting a family pet.
"Why this matters:"?
Officers should be held to a HIGHER standard, not a lower one. They carry guns and are trained to protect. When we remove this exemption, we save dogs. We protect families. We restore trust.
"with power comes great responsibility. Police Officers should be held to a higher standard, not a lower one."- . -Tanell Jensen
Please sign and share to help pass Novas Law. we don't want anyone else to ever have to experience the pain and suffering we endured that day. She never had a chance. Over 10,000 dogs per year are shot and killed by the police each year. It shouldn't be traumatic every time you see a cop. We need to restore trust and make the Police good again. DOG LIVES MATTER
