The US Dept. of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has just rejected the chicken industry’s proposal to allow for the increase of already dangerously fast slaughter line speeds of up to 140 birds per minute--or more than two birds every second. Despite this welcome step, the debate over high-speed slaughter is still heating up. Please keep sharing our petition (http://bit.ly/stopHIMP) TODAY to help put an end once and for all to dangerous and cruel high-speed slaughter for birds and pigs alike! With your help, Compassion Over Killing (COK) recently worked alongside a coalition of worker, animal, and consumer protection organizations that together drove more than 100,000 comments to the agency on this petition, vastly more than what agency proposed rules usually receive. While the USDA’s ultimate rejection of the chicken industry’s dangerous petition is welcomed, this issue is far from resolved. FSIS announced that it still intends to consider waiver requests for line speed increases by individual slaughterhouses, which could jeopardize the welfare of hundreds of millions of animals. As COK wrote in our comment to the USDA, “Investigations, whistleblower reports, and [FSIS'] own records reveal that animal suffering is already rampant in poultry slaughterhouses, even at current line speeds of up to 140 or, in certain rare cases, 175 birds per minute.” And FSIS is also pushing forward with a proposal to expand its high-speed pig slaughter program, HIMP, and is expected to begin soliciting public comments on the proposal tomorrow. The HIMP pilot program has drawn outrage from nearly a quarter million consumers in the aftermath of COK’s investigation of Quality Pork Processors, one of the fastest slaughter plants in the nation operating under this pilot program. Our shocking footage reveals egregious cruelty and food safety concerns. Help us reach our goal of a quarter million signatures against cruel, dangerous high-speed slaughter--soon to be personally delivered to the USDA by former COK investigator Scott David.
