Join us in tweeting “Not So Fast!” @USDA TODAY (see our sample tweet below)! A formal proposal to expand the USDA’s dangerous high-speed slaughter program nationwide is still in review, but that hasn’t stopped the USDA from pushing forward under the radar. The agency quietly granted a new Clemens Food pig slaughter plant in Coldwater, Michigan a waiver allowing it to run at high kill line speeds with reduced government oversight, just like HIMP plants--without offering any opportunity for public input. Speak out on Twitter with us today! Nearly a quarter million of you have taken a stand against HIMP’s expansion after a Compassion Over Killing investigation of a HIMP plant exposed employees dragging, kicking, beating, and excessively shocking pigs as they struggled to keep up with the high line speeds, and pigs covered in abscesses or feces being processed for human consumption with a USDA stamp of approval. Yet instead of heeding the concerns of the consumers it is charged with protecting, the USDA is helping the meat industry line its own pockets. The agency issued Clemens the waiver for the purpose of testing out “new technology”--even though there’s nothing new about this years-long pilot program that has drawn opposition from dozens of worker, consumer, and animal protection organizations, as well as members of Congress.
