The Ontario Northland Transportation Commission hopes to return its business case to restore passenger rail service in Northeastern Ontario to the provincial government by the end of the year. The case study developed with the Metrolinx agency makes proposals for the reinstatement of a passenger train between Toronto and Cochrane.

"This is a very comprehensive plan that examines all aspects of operating a potential rail service for travelers," says Rebecca McGlynn, spokesperson for Ontario Northland.

Once the plan is in the hands of the government, it will take some time for it to decide to approve it, adds the spokesman.

The return of the Northlander Passenger Train was one of the election promises of the Doug Ford government.

The Northlander was abolished by the Liberal government in 2012 and replaced by a coach service. The cancellation of the Cochrane-Toronto rail service for 36 years has been the subject of much protest.

Following the last provincial budget, in which the government announced its intention to develop a business plan for a passenger train service between Toronto and Cochrane, NEORN conducted a survey asking the public what services it wanted.

Some 5,000 people responded to the survey in less than a month and the results were presented at Ontario Northland, says Lucille Firth.

"I hope some of this information will be reflected in the report to the government," she adds.
