Demand minimum wage for NAU student workers!

The Issue

Northern Arizona University student workers are one of the most integral factors when it comes to the success and operation of daily campus life. With the city and state minimum wage increase causing inflation in the housing market, as well as general living expenses, NAU student workers have suffered the most due to the university being exempt from having to pay its temporary workers the minimum wage. As Flagstaff's biggest employers, NAU relies heavily on its student workers in order to run successfully and maintain its status as a desired university. With student workers making up a majority of NAU's employees, minimum wage has become an ongoing issue. Student workers are being paid as little as $8.50 an hour, compared to the city's minimum wage of $12.00 an hour and the state's $10.00 an hour, and have struggled to meet the minimum needs required to be successful college students. These student workers have been asked to handle customer complaints and inquiries, partake in difficult manual labor, solve IT issues, keep up with latest multimedia equipment, and assist other departments whenever necessary and available. This includes helping set up for concerts that take place on campus. NAU is not only a university, but a community; and although students workers are happy to assist other departments, they are often not compensated for the work they are helping with. Also, when it comes to certain tasks within the different departments across campus, most student workers have not been properly trained for such work. This lack of training causes student workers to struggle to complete tasks in an orderly manner. Student workers are often required to arrive to work to open buildings as well as stay beyond midnight to finish events and close said buildings. These are just some of the few demands student workers are asked to meet while not being paid the minimum requirements of the city and state. The student workers have, in essence, been asked to go above and beyond while not being paid to give minimum effort. Please think about the efforts of being a full-time college student while trying to work a part-time job and balancing homework and personal life. The student-workers are not asking to be treated in high regards, or even demanding for an above average pay. We are asking to be treated with the basic requirements, the minimal efforts to help us be successful during our time in college.
