Rename Daniels Hall on NC State Campus

The Issue

Josephus Daniels was a virulent white supremacist who used his power as head of the largest newspaper in the state of North Carolina to stoke racial animosity advocating violence against black people.  In the study commissioned to review the Wilmington Massacre, in which 20 to 60 black people were slaughtered for having been successful in the Reconstruction era, the report cited only one name as a cause for the Wilmington Massacre.  That name was Josephus Daniels.

A statue of Josephus Daniels was recently removed from Raleigh.  In a statement regarding the removal, the Daniels family wrote:
"Josephus Daniels’ legacy of service to North Carolina and our country does not transcend his reprehensible stance on race and his active support of racist activities."

Wake County Public Schools just recently announced that Daniels Middle School in Raleigh will be renamed to Oberlin Middle School.  This move was made in recognition of the horrible deeds of Josephus Daniels, and the message that his name being attached to a prominent building of education sends to the students of that school.

As an alumnus of NC State University, it offends me deeply that we still have a building named after Josephus Daniels.  Please sign this, share this, and help make this change a reality for all of us who deeply love our fellow man, and want them to feel welcome at this fine institution.
