I would like Pine Mountain Lake WWTP to stop dumping wastewater in the Jacob Fork River.

The Issue

I want to share with you all a cause that is dear to my heart. For years the river where I live has been a big part of my life. My children swim at South Mountain State Park / Jacob Fork River here almost every day in the summer, we have picnics here, we have shared memories with people we have lost, here on this river. We have always known about the sewage plant at Pine Mtn Development Golf Course and when the hotel was shut down there was not much treated sewage coming out. Recently a group moved into the hotel called “TLR” or The Last Reformation and they have been having large gatherings since they have moved in. Yes, even during the pandemic. July 4th weekend was awful and so was this past weekend. The hotel has 100 rooms and There are 30 townhouses/condos and a restaurant and a golf shop and multiple RV hook-ups on this sewage system. On the permit it states 150 individuals are on this system. It’s simply not true. Also the lines, the holding pond, and the system itself needs work. Not to mention there have been many violations in the last year. The numbers show me a lot. Last week my daughter went swimming in our usual spot (before I looked at these numbers) and Saturday we ended up at the doctors office for a inner ear and a middle ear infection. Today my neighbors son had a rash and when he went to the doctor was told it was “swimmers itch”. I do not think it is a coincidence at all. We simply cannot let this go on any longer or the Jacob Fork River Catawba River Basin will be ruined. If you continue to go over the levels you are supposed to be dumping each week eventually you are going to be swimming in bacteria. Compliance is key but with so much sewage capacity coming in and a system not able to handle the influx it will it not work to our benefit. I ask my community to please take care of our river it is the only one we have. This is not personal to the homeowners of Pine Mtn and I know some may not even be aware of what is going on but your HOA is on the permit. I do not blame anyone but we in the community want this problem fixed. My husband works for many developments and they have septic tanks that can be pumped. I know this happens in the city with officials constantly looking over, but we are in the country. It is not checked as often. I have talked to professionals and they say Pine Mtn does not have the capacity to treat this influx with their current system. I have been putting up signs, went and purchased poster board and placed them on stakes on the right of way and private land and they have been torn down, numerous times, and my husband and I have been threatened and cussed by Pine Mtn homeowners. My husband actually caught one homeowner at our house tearing signs down. If you are doing nothing, then why not let the public know what is going on. This is not about no one in particular, me, my neighbors ,the residents of pine mtn, the president of the HOA, but about the river. I have three girls who all plan on living in family land for years to come and I want their children to enjoy the Jacob Fork River too. Please email Bradley.bennett@ncdenr.gov and let him we say NO to this permit renewal! Permit #0036935. Call 1-919-707-3629 or 828-296-4500. We just want a public hearing to discuss saving our river before it’s too late. If you don’t do anything else look at the pictures. I will also enclose some of the violations and the numbers. I know they have done this for years and people say it’s been going on for forty years what does it matter now we’ll it’s time to change. If you don’t care it is fine but I know there is someone out there that cares. Please call email write any you know of who may can do something today. Thanks you for your time.
