Let’s be very clear on this post. NOPE does not support any Gold Mining in the St. Mary’s River Valley!
Atlantic Gold and many other mining companies are pressing into Nova Scotia and the government is encouraging it. These new guidelines are important for any community who finds themselves in the same situation as we are. These guidelines will be very important for communities who can not stop a mine from coming to use as standards to follow if a mine is given the green light for your community.
Here are two from the list that I have highlighted. But I would encourage you to read them all.
Number 2: Ban new mine tailings facilities immediately upstream from inhabited areas
Number 11: Consent of affected communities, including the rights to self determination and FPIC for Indigenous Peoples
