Noor Jehan the elephant at Karachi zoo died at the age of 17 yesterday. The average age of an Asian elephant is 48 years while an African elephants can live upto 70 years oof age. I have been following Noor Jehan's health for the past few weeks and what I realised was that she had given up of life because animals also get depression and anxiety just like us humans, which is evident from how she was almost non responsive to what the vets were trying to do for her. I was actually sad to see her leave like this. 

But if you think as Noor Jehan, death was a better option then living in the dismal conditions at the Karachi zoo. Why would any living creature want to live like that? I saw some disturbing pictures of the other animals housed in that zoo. Any person who has a heart cannot look at those pictures. All the animals are under-nourished and are living in a very unhygienic and unnatural habitat. I personally think that all these wild animals should be kept in their natural habitats and we should close all zoos. 

I saw on social media today that the Sri Lankan government is gifting Pakistan two elephants that will again be kept in these zoos that do not have adequate facilities. It is actually animal cruelty to have them housed in these Zoos. I urge and beg the Sri Lankan government not to send these elephants to Pakistan as we cannot take care of them and they might also perish just like Noor Jehan. It will be very sad to see that happen.
