The Issue

RESIDENTS OF DEARBORN, SOUTHGATE, TAYLOR, MELVINDALE AND LINCOLN PARK AND DEARBORN HEIGHTS!!! AS NON ALLEN PARK RESIDENTS IN SURROUDINGS CITIES-we are deeply concerned about the proposed establishment of an AI data center in our beloved community. While the initiative promises economic advantages, it is paramount to consider the broader implications to the environment and public health, not only for residents of Allen Park but also for those in neighboring areas. This petition is to REFUSE AN AI DATA CENTER IN THE LISTED CITIES LISTER ABOVE AND JOIN IN EFFORTS TO KEEP THIS AI DATA CENTER OUT OF ALLEN PARK AS WELL.

The proposed data center could lead to increased air and noise pollution from the vast amount of energy required to power these facilities and the necessary cooling systems. Studies repeatedly show that such pollution can have deleterious effects on both human health and local ecosystems. For instance, a report by the Environmental Protection Agency highlights how computer data centers significantly contribute to regional carbon emissions, potentially leading to respiratory illnesses and aggravating climate change.

Moreover, the increase in traffic due to the construction and subsequent operation of the center could strain local infrastructure, resulting in longer commute times and more wear and tear on our roads. This extends beyond Allen Park and will impact neighboring cities, making it an issue of regional concern. NOT TO MENTION, THE PROPOSED DATA CENTER WILL SIT BEHIND MELVINDALE HIGH SCHOOL, BEHIND INTER-CITY BAPTIST AND BEHIND MAPLE HEIGHTS RETIREMENT-our most vulnerable populations will be the first to be affected.

Locals and non-residents alike deserve a say in the development projects that affect them. These facilities should be set up in areas where they align with existing infrastructure plans and not at the cost of community welfare. A more thorough environmental impact assessment and consideration of alternative locations are critical steps that must be prioritized before any further action is taken.

I urge non-residents of Allen Park, particularly those residing in nearby communities, to stand with us in voicing your concern regarding this project. By signing this petition, you are helping to ensure that community health and environmental sustainability are not sacrificed for the sake of industrial expansion. Your signature is a step towards safeguarding our shared environment and health.

Please join us in rejecting the proposed AI data centers in the cities listed above, as well as standing with Allen Park in their refusal of the AI data center in their city.

I have seen the proposal. I have made my comments publicly known about how I feel about the proposed data center. Additionally, it's important to note that, currently, there is no action that I am aware of that the Council can take. It is in the hands of the Planning Commission. I appreciate the messages and apologize for not responding sooner. I am aware of both petitions - the non-Allen Park citizen and the Allen Park citizen petitions. I do not deny the importance of this issue. As a 27-year resident of Allen Park whose home is in the immediate proximity of the proposed data center, I am very concerned. The proposed location is in the C6C Regional Business-Mixed Use district. The current Allen Park Ordinance #04-2014 Section 52-484 Permitted Uses, states the following: The following uses are permitted in the C6C Southfield Road Mixed Use Development District: Subsection 1: All permitted uses allowed in the RD, Research and Development Districts. Referencing the RD, Research and Development District Ordinance Section 52-506 Permitted Uses: Subsection 2 states: Data processing and computer centers, including incidental service and maintenance of electronic data processing equipment. As it is written in the Ordinance and a proposal that meets those requirements has already been submitted, a change to the ordinance at this time would likely result in legal action against the city. In addition, a request for a moratorium on data center development at this time would likely result in legal action against the city as well. All this information is publicly accessible via the Allen Park City Ordinance Municode site. I believe in transparency and am providing the information as others may not know where to look for existing ordinance language associated with this proposed development. As always, I am always available and willing to try my best to answer any and all questions from the Allen Park residents I represent.
