The Issue

West End Lake Shore Park, facing beautiful  Lake Pontchartrain, is a jewel of both New Orleans and Jefferson parish.  It has been noted that the sunsets here are among the most beautiful in the world.  People have gathered here for decades  and have admired the land for it's beauty, wildlife and expansive horizons.

We now have the opportunity to make this paradise part of the National Historic Register.  In addition to some of the most beautiful scenery in the area, the 1915 Darlington Prismatic Fountain is an artistic marvel that brought light and life to the area.  The WPA era lagoon,  the elegant bridge, and beautifully crafted balustrades are all part of a rich heritage that we can preserve.

However, despite its historical significance and cultural impact, West End Lake Shore Park has not yet received the recognition it truly deserves. Being listed on the National Historic Register would not only honor its past but also ensure its preservation for future generations to cherish.

West End Lake Shore Park is home to 112 species of birds including eagles, pelicans, and migratory birds.  Pelicans land and rest on the pilings, and eagles sit atop the oak trees,  while  shrimp boats return to Bucktown Harbor. in the evening. Individuals fish while couples walk along the shore to enjoy the natural setting of  West End.

The nomination of this beloved park would acknowledge its role as an emblem of natural beauty and stand as a breathing piece of our cultural heritage.

Please sign this petition so that we can preserve this area as a historic site. Let us come together to celebrate the beauty and grandeur of Lake Pontchartrain, it's shoreline and keep it as a piece of Louisiana's history.

Sadly, there currently is resistance from elected officials who aspire to commercially develop the lake shore and wildlife habitat of this unique park. Any commercial development will destroy this delicate ecosystem and fragile estuary.
