No use of proctorio (or similar) in UOW invigilation
The issue
UOW has decided that for all online exams an extension called Proctorio must be installed on students browsers. This extension is an invasion of privacy and a violation of human rights as students we accept that when we sit an exam we should be held responsible to complete the exam on our own and without assistance, this is why exams have always been done in person.
Proctorio acts very similarly to malware, it requires access to your camera, filesystem, scans all applications you have open, tracks your eye movements and has the ability to flag you as "suspected of cheating". Proctorio has been involved in numerous privacy violations and scandals such as CEO of exam monitoring software Proctorio apologises for posting student's chat logs. Other universities have already banned the use of Proctorio due to these concerns such as the University of Illinois. Proctorio has been shown to be inherently racist, and "Struggles with dark skin".
Installing this software is a violation of our basic rights and is not acceptable. As students signing this petition shows that you do not support installation of Proctorio on your device and would be happy with any ordinary alternative such as joining a meeting room on zoom with your webcam and microphone on where there is an examination supervisor to monitor students, sitting an in person exam or sitting an open book examination..
