No to Tauranga Councils high Court appeal to kill Chopper
The issue
Sign this petition to show that you are NOT in favour of the Tauranga council spending YOU the rate payers hard earned money to appeal to High Court after their lost court case. Sign this petition to show that you believe the council should drop their personal vendetta against the family and let them move forward with their lives.
Chopper spent 271 Days locked in a small cage at the Tauranga dog pound with no exercise, no fresh air and had no choice but to defecate where he slept... only to have his cage hosed down to clean it while he was still in there. He was put in this horrendous situation after an incident where he bit a vet as he was due to get desexed.
This went to court where the Vet and Tauranga council lost their case to charge the owner and have chopper killed as the judge ruled this was exceptional circumstances and ordered all charges to be dropped...along with granting Chopper his freedom.
This was not a decision that was settled on the day as the judge assessed all evidence given for nearly two weeks after the trial before making his conclusion on the case.
With an unlimited amount of rate payers money, the council are wanting to appeal a highly respected judges decision to get the case over turned in high court and charge Choppers owner with the maximum penalty of three years prison or a $20,000 fine. A charge on Choppers owner also means Chopper can be executed according to the dog control act 1996.
Our family have been fighting for nearly a year and just want to move forward with our lives. The Tauranga council and those involved are using rate payers hard earned money in an attempt to mend their damaged reputation and appeal this to High Court.
The High Court fees are astronomical and that money will be better spent in the community, especially while small business are failing, the cost of living is going up and the common people are struggling to make ends meet.
Since leaving the pound Chopper has been put through an enormous amount of rehab in order to strengthen the lack of muscle in his back legs, other injuries on his legs also needed surgery and Chopper had hot spots on the top of his head. He has worked with a trainer who continues to say he has no behavioural issues and Chopper has had a chance to have cuddles with some of his supporters in the public. He has also been desexed by an amazing vet with no issues at all.
