The Issue

Our Christian belief is a sacred conviction that we, as believers, hold dear. It is not just a set of rules or guidelines, but a divine relationship with God Himself. Our faith is centered on teachings that have been handed down for generations, and this spiritual foundation is something that no human authority can, or should, regulate. When the state, through the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL), imposes regulations on the Church, it suggests an audacious attempt to control the divine, which is fundamentally beyond human jurisdiction.

The CRL's regulatory decision undermines the sanctity of our beliefs and practices. Historically, the church has thrived and guided millions through moral and spiritual crises without state intervention. The notion that a secular body can dictate aspects of divine worship contradicts the tenets of religious freedom enshrined in both our national principles and international human rights.

This regulation not only infringes on our freedom to worship but also threatens the independence of religious institutions in South Africa. It poses a grave danger to the diverse tapestry of religious communities, each with their unique practices and doctrines. How can one body standardize such diverse expressions of faith?

Moreover, this move by the CRL can set a harmful precedent for the future. Today, it is the Christian church under scrutiny; tomorrow, it might be any other faith. This is a call to every believer, every follower of religion, to stand united for the protection of our collective religious liberties.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the autonomy of religious institutions and affirming that regulation of belief systems by the state is not acceptable. We urge the CRL to reconsider and immediately withdraw their regulation on the Church of South Africa. Let our voices resonate in a chorus of faith and freedom.
