The Issue

While Americans are going hungry, losing affordable health care, and enduring the continued erosion of our Constitutional rights, the United States government is spending 52% of the federal budget on war -- war in Iran, war in Gaza, war in our communities.

In a little over a year of President Trump’s second presidency, the Treasury Department has declared the United States insolvent, with a debt of $41.72 Trillion. Despite this enormous debt, life has only gotten worse for millions of Americans. Congress, which maintains responsibility of the federal budget, has allowed this debt to spiral out of control at the direction of the Executive Branch.

President Trump has now launched an illegal and short-sighted war with Iran, sidestepping Congressional approval and ignoring the will of the people. Before the first bombs dropped on February 28, 70% of voters opposed military action in Iran. Now the President is deploying thousands of Marines to the region, ready to sacrifice another generation of sons and daughters. Not only is this undemocratic, it is unacceptable.

We are declaring a national war tax strike until Congress holds Trump and his warmongering allies accountable for the loss of life, violations of international law, and exorbitant cost to taxpayers for these thoughtless military deployments in Iran, Gaza, Venezuela and beyond.

The Costs (and counting):

  • $20 Billion+ spent on unauthorized regime change operations in Iran. $200B more requested by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
  • Humanitarian Crisis: Thousands of civilians dead in Iran and Lebanon, including more than150 schoolgirls in Iran. 73,000+ lives lost in Gaza, where 70% of the weapons are U.S.-supplied.
  • Environmental War Crimes: The destruction of oil facilities in Tehran has created a "black rain" of carcinogens affecting generations.

The Demand: We, the undersigned, refuse to finance the unauthorized and devastating military operations in Iran, the ongoing military support for the genocide in Gaza, and the continued militarization of our domestic borders. We pledge to withhold all or a symbolic portion of our 2025 Federal Income Taxes and redirect those funds to humanitarian relief and community-building efforts until Congress takes action to stop further military engagements using the War Powers Resolution.

We stand in the tradition of the Algonquin Nation, the Quakers, and the Vietnam-era war tax resisters. We are not against taxation for the common good; we are against our taxes being used to promote senseless violence at the expense of our collective humanity.
