Kerala Forest Department Protects the Killers of Pregnant Elephant

Kerala Forest Department Protects the Killers of Pregnant Elephant
The Issue
Pregnant Elephant Killed by Bomb Concealed in Pineapple, The perpetrators have been well Protected by the Kerala Forest Department for the last 3 years.
The world was shocked by the horrifying death of a pregnant elephant who stayed 5 days in a river with its exploded mouth. The Kerala Forest department did not take any attempt to rescue the elephant until a worldwide hue and cry rose to save the elephant. Photos showed the elephant standing in the river with her mouth and trunk submersed in the water, for some relief from the unbearable pain. The wounded and pregnant elephant collapsed in the Velliyar river, Mannarkkad, Kerala, India on 27 May 2020.
Three people were booked under this crime in which two were arrested and are walking free now. The third accused Abdul Kareem is still absconding for these long three years. As a rule, charge sheet should be submitted within 60 days in the magistrate court, but the Kerala Forest Department neither initiated any steps to submit charge sheet in the court, nor did they arrest the third accused. The accused protected by the Kerala Government are ; Abdul Kareem( Father) Raiyazhudheen, (son) and Wilson. Wilson is the third accused from Edavanna who had made the bomb and inserted it into the pineapple based on the request from father and son. No enquiry has been conducted of the past crime record of these accused or any enquiry conducted by the government in similar elephant deaths
In Kerala. Captive and wild elephants are being ill treated mercilessly though they have robust protection laws in India. In certain sensational incidents like this, the forest department registers crimes but make a path for the escape of the culprits by destroying and tampering evidence or without submitting charge sheet. It is shocking that not a single person has been punished for crimes against elephant in Kerala in the past 5 years! This clearly shows that the Kerala Forest Department itself is the wildlife Mafia in the state.
The information (RTI) received from the forest department shows that, the Head Quarters at Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala, India does not have any crime record or punishment record. An unreliable information (RTI) states that 780 elephants died in the state between 2016 and 2022. In which, 107 captive elephants and 673 wild elephants. A large number of known elephant deaths that had appeared in the media were not included in the list.
The information(RTI) provided by the department is always untrue and never tallies.
The death statistics shown in financial year and calendar year has huge differences. For instance, the number of deaths stated as per RTI is as:-
Financial year
2009-10 - 76 nos. 2010 – 5 nos.
2010 -11 – 68 nos. 2011 – 2 nos.
2011-2012 – 53 nos. 2012 – 1 no.
Electrocution, Explosives, Hunting, and Poisoning has taken the life of 42 among 673 wild elephants between 2016 and 2022. Vehicle accidents, infighting, natural causes, predation and old age has taken 638 lives in the same period. We can easily assume that more than double the number of these deaths have happened in the wild with the knowledge and collusion of the forest department. FIR registered only for 49 cases out of 577 wild elephant deaths during 2016-2021, shows the Kerala Forest Department shields the killers on tax payers money. No charge sheets produced in court on these FIRs so far.
As filing the charge sheet was delayed to punish the culprits of crime , we the forum of animal lovers plead to the general public as well as the public to cast your sign in this petition which would help us in submitting this mass petition in front of the honorable Prime Minister and Ministry of Forest for their immediate intervention to punish the murderers, as well as in various atrocities against wildlife in Kerala, India.
