No public money for private schools. No school vouchers in Tennessee. (HB0190/SB0196)

Research shows that children who use vouchers to attend private schools do not demonstrate significant improvements in student achievement. Private schools that take vouchers are not required to provide special services for children with disabilities or language needs, provide transportation to their schools, or utilize licensed teachers. And, because most private schools in Tennessee are religious, vouchers use tax money to fund particular religious instruction to which many taxpayers may have objections.

Letter to
Tennessee State House
Tennessee State Senate
As a voter and concerned Tennessean, I urge you to OPPOSE any legislation creating vouchers that use public money to pay for private schools. Vouchers take much needed funding and engaged families away from our already underfunded and underperforming public schools. Research has not shown measurable improvement in learning for those children who accept the voucher. Further, because private schools do not accept all children, a voucher program would offer nothing to those students who struggle academically, thereby perpetuating the achievement gap. Also, private schools that take vouchers are not required to provide special services for children with disabilities or language needs, provide transportation to their schools, or utilize licensed teachers. And, because most private schools in Tennessee are religious, vouchers use tax money to fund religious instruction to which many taxpayers may have objections. I urge you to vote NO on any voucher legislation, including the current voucher bill (HB 0190/SB0196).
