The PTA Council has officially released its highly anticipated study on synthetic turf. This report provides formal backing for our community's concerns, shifting the focus to student health and the District's duty to engage with parents.
SAFETY HIGHLIGHTS: A Multi-Layered Risk 🔥🧪
The report brings a much-needed focus to the biological and environmental safety of our students. Key concerns include:
- Extreme Heat: Data from our own SMMUSD campuses—including Will Rogers and Samohi—confirms that on a mild 82°F day, our turf hit 111°F. That is nearly 10° hotter than the nearby asphalt blacktop.
- Chemical Exposure: Significant concerns regarding PFAS ("forever chemicals") and the cumulative impact of synthetic materials on our youngest learners. 😷
- Microplastics & Runoff: The environmental toll of plastic blades breaking down into our local ecosystem and the loss of natural, regenerative space. 🌊
THE RECOMMENDATIONS: Accountability & Dialogue 🧒
Based on these safety findings, the report recommends:
- Re-evaluating synthetic turf at all elementary and Pre-K sites, with a focus on replacing these areas with grass or other natural surfaces.
- Meaningful Dialogue: The report explicitly calls for the District to engage the community in discussion BEFORE any new turf is installed.
