No Permit change without the Community

Public Statement on Community-Led Development in Pittsburgh
The Hill District stands as one of Pittsburgh’s most historic and culturally significant Black communities. Known nationally as “Little Harlem,” it was once a thriving center of music, business, and innovation. However, the scars of past urban renewal projects, particularly the Civic Arena, remain deep. This project alone displaced thousands of families, dismantled hundreds of businesses, and isolated the neighborhood from the rest of the city. Today, new redevelopment projects risk repeating these mistakes without proper community input.
Mayor O’Connor’s executive order aimed at accelerating the permitting process for development projects has sparked concerns. While efficiency is crucial, the directive overlooked the essential role of community participation, leaving residents feeling sidelined in decisions that directly affect their lives and neighborhoods. Without their insight and experiences, the risk of repeating historical injustices remains high. adopted the Master Plan!
Community involvement in urban development is not merely an ideal but a necessity for fairness and lasting impact. Mayor O’Connor, a seasoned public servant, knows well the strength and wisdom of Pittsburgh’s people. Their voices should not merely be heard but should guide the future of their communities.
We propose a concrete plan: establish a Community Advisory Board that includes representatives from neighborhoods most affected by these developments. This board should have a definitive role in decision-making, ensuring that projects benefit, rather than displace, existing communities. Furthermore, mandatory public consultations prior to any major development project can facilitate transparency, trust, and collaboration between the city and its residents.
Our goal is simple yet powerful: a development process that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of the entire Pittsburgh community. To achieve this, we respectfully request Mayor O’Connor to amend the executive order and implement mechanisms that prioritize inclusive, community-led development.
Sign this petition to demand an equitable and just approach to development in Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. Let’s work together for a city that honors its past while building a brighter, inclusive future for all.
