The Issue

Public parks are places where families gather, children play, and communities come together. The names we choose for these spaces should reflect values of safety, trust, and respect.

Recent reports have raised serious allegations about Cesar Chavez’s conduct, including claims involving inappropriate behavior with women and minors. While these allegations are still being examined, they have already led organizations connected to his legacy to pause events and begin internal reviews.

Given the seriousness of these concerns, it is appropriate to reconsider whether public parks — spaces meant for families and children — should continue to carry his name.

This is not about erasing history. It is about ensuring that the individuals we honor in public spaces reflect the standards we expect in our communities today.

We call on city councils, parks departments, and local governments across the United States to stop naming new parks after Cesar Chavez and to review existing park names.

Sign this petition to stand for safe community spaces, accountability, and responsible public honors.
